Crystal of the Month | Lapis Lazuli | September
Sapphire is the original birthstone for August but it is extremely rare and very expensive so lapis lazuli is a great modern birthstone alternative. Lapis lazuli is something I have only recently brought to my shop because the majority of it comes out of Afghanistan. It has been what the crystal world refers to as a ‘conflict mineral’ for some time. This means that buying this crystal has a high chance of funding a conflict. In this case, the mines for lapis lazuli were taken over by a terrorist group. I would never want to help fund something of that nature, nor would I want my customers unknowingly funding it. I have been able to find lapis sourced much more ethically in India, but it is more expensive.
Lapis lazuli is the stone of the night sky. It is a dark royal blue colour with stripes of pyrite (a gold colour crystal) running through it. It is made up of lazurite, pyrite and calcite.
Countries you can find Lapis Lazuli:

At the moment I only have lapis in my crystal chip earrings as I want to make sure I know where the stone is being sourced from. Come back September 22nd for my Libra blog post and October 1st for my next crystal of the month blog post.
