Crystal of the Month | Tourmaline | October

Tourmaline is formed from molten magma from volcanoes deep underground. The name ‘tourmaline’ came from the Sinhalese word ‘turmali’ which translates to ‘mixed colour precious stone’. They grow naturally in columns which is called a ‘columnar’ structure. It was first discovered in 1554 by a Spanish explorer who mistook the green tourmaline for an emerald.

Colours tourmaline can be:

  • Black (schorl)
  • Brown (dravide)
  • Green (verdelite)
  • Pink
  • Red (rubellite)
  • Yellow
  • Blue (indicolite)
  • Watermelon (pink in the middle surrounded by green)
  • Multicoloured (elbaite)

When a tourmaline is subject to pressure or heat it develops an electrical charge. As a result of this, it's often used in science experiments. Due to this electric charge, a tourmaline can actually attract particles of dust and dirt to it when heated up. Allegedly this was first discovered by a group of Dutch children.

Countries you can find Tourmaline:

  • Sri Lanka
  • Brazil
  • Africa
  • United States
  • Australia
  • Italy

Metaphysical Properties (although depending on the colour of the tourmaline the properties might differ):

  • Protective against negative energy
  • Cleanses
  • Balances
  • Helps you to understand yourself
  • Releases tension
  • Helps with insecurities

Unfortunately I only have black tourmaline in my shop at the moment in the crystal chip earrings and bracelets! Keep your eyes peeled though because it is a crystal I like to get in whenever I can. Come back October 22nd for my Scorpio blog post and November 1st for my next crystal of the month blog post.
