Crystal of the Month | Turquoise | December
Turquoise got its name from the French word ‘turquois’ which translates to ‘Turkish’. This is because the stone was brought through Turkey to get to Europe, despite not actually being found there. The name is still relevant to this day as it’s the only crystal to have a colour named after it. This was likely because of the unique blue/green of turquoise. Turquoise has been used for centuries as ancient cultures believed that it warded off evil and would change colour to warn of danger.
Countries you can find turquoise:
- United states
- Mexico
- China
- Peru
- Poland
- Tibet
- Russia
- France
A lot of the ‘turquoise’ sold today is actually dyed howlite. I’d recommend doing a google search on the differences in appearance if you’re looking to buy some turquoise. If you already have some turquoise and want to test it, an easy way to tell is to use a small amount of acetone on the crystal. If it’s dyed, the dye will come off with acetone.

I don't have a lot of turquoise currently unfortunately, just the crystal chip bracelets and earrings.
